The types of counselling provided

Pamela's integrated theoretical approach makes use of two main models, the psychodynamic model and the systems model.

The psychodynamic model looks at couple problems through the unconscious interaction of the couple - the process being that of insight, containment, then new experience.

The systems model looks at the meanings held by clients that have been constructed through the context of their world. It uses those meanings to explore the interaction between them, their significant others and their extended world in order to construct different possibilities.

The focus is interpersonal. Her method of therapy can be short or long term.

The kinds of problems worked with:

Pamela provides counselling for people with relationship difficulties. During a lasting relationship, couples face important decisions and turning points. For example, whether to get married, how to adjust to pregnancy and the birth of a baby, problems with communication and resolving conflict, recovering from an affair, relationship breakdown, health, work-related issues, adjusting to retirement and problems as a couple grow older. Relationship counselling enables a couple to examine and decide how best to cope with these difficulties in a private and safe environment.

Counselling for people considering separation or divorce

The ending of a marriage or a long relationship is generally a slow and painful process. Counselling can help people going through this to overcome emotional difficulties and develop the confidence to rebuild their lives. Particular emphasis is placed on helping parents achieve stable and workable arrangements for their children.

Counselling for people with sexual problems

Sexual problems can affect many couples and individuals. Sometimes the problem is long-standing whilst at other times it is linked to recent events causing stress and unhappiness. Pamela is trained to work with sexual problems in the context of a couple's relationship. Counselling helps people understand what has gone wrong and to resolve the sexual problem and the confused and painful emotions it evokes. If sexual difficulties require a more specialist intervention Pamela will be able to refer you on to Psychosexual Therapy.
