Frequently asked questions

    Q. How does online counselling work?

We agree a day and time for your session and I send you a Zoom invite. I will also send you step by step instructions on how to use Zoom for your counselling session. Online sessions work best on WiFi connections and using a laptop or tablet. Mobile phones are not usually recommended for online therapy sessions.

Q. What if my partner and I are in different locations?

We can use the online platform, Zoom, to work online together. My Zoom account allows for mutiple simultaneous attendees. This means that we can each be in different locations, even different countries and time zones and still sign in to the same session together.

Q. How many sessions do I need?

It is suggested that clients initially think in terms of 4-6 sessions attended weekly. Further sessions are then spaced at intervals mutually agreed with Pamela and based on the client needs, issues and availability . Review of progress is done regularly by clients and Pamela to ensure that counselling continues to be helpful, focussed, relevant and good value for money. Some clients choose to take breaks from counselling to consolidate progress and are free to return at a later date if they wish. There are no rules!

Q. What does confidentiality mean?

Nothing you say is revealed to anyone else without your specific consent. Notes are kept in line with current Data Protection requirements. However, breaking confidentiality might need to be considered if there is substantial concern of a risk of serious harm to yourself or another - especially vulnerable adults and children - or when required for legal reasons.

Q. Can I come on my own?

Yes. Whether you are single, or if you have a partner who doesn't want to come or you simply want to discuss things alone, you are welcome to bring any aspect of your current, past or future relationships to counselling by yourself.

Q. Do you have to be married?

No, couple counselling offers therapy to anyone, whether or not they are married, in a committed relationship, or on their own and whatever their age, race, gender, religion, personal beliefs or social background.

Q. What if separation is the only answer?

Whilst it is a difficult decision, especially if there are children involved, sometimes separation is the only solution you want to pursue. By helping you to talk to each other and helping you to come to terms with the ending, counselling can help to make the break less acrimonious. This is vital because if there are children involved you will be parents for the rest of your life and it would be enormously helpful if you can both be closely involved in your children's lives harmoniously .

Q. What does it cost?

The standard fee is £80 per one-hour session and £120 per 90 minute session. The fees are the same for online sessions. Sessions are available both daytime and early evenings, though not over the weekends. There is an initial consultation to gain an understanding of the problems and for you to ask questions and discuss how we would work together. You then decide independently whether Pamela is the right counsellor for you.

Q. How often and when can I come?

Appointments are generally for one hour, on a regular, but not always, weekly basis. Day and time may vary to suit client availability. 90 minute sessions can be requested, especially if clients are travelling some distance.

Daytime and early evening appointments are available Monday - Thursday.

Q. What if I can't make an appointment?

If you cancel or miss a session without giving two working days' notice, then you would be charged for that missed appointment. If appointments can be rescheduled within the same week,  then there is no additional charge.
